If you’ve ever tried to buy shipping containers of scrap metal from international suppliers, you know the terminology can get messy fast. You ask a local yard for “Bare Bright,” and then a global processor sends you a quote for millberry copper. It’s enough to make any procurement manager pause before wiring funds.

So, what is millberry copper exactly? In the global commodities market, Millberry is the absolute gold standard of copper wire. It is 99.9% to 99.99% pure, unalloyed, and completely untinned. To qualify as true millberry, the wire must be mechanically stripped of all its plastic insulation. If it has been burnt in a fire to remove the casing, it immediately loses its classification because of the ash and oxidation left behind.

Millberry vs. Bare Bright: Is there a difference?

This is the most common point of confusion for buyers. The short answer is no, there is no physical difference. They are the exact same material. The difference simply comes down to geography and trade jargon.

In the United States, scrapyards and brokers almost exclusively use the term “Bare Bright” or refer to the ISRI code “Barley.” However, in European, Asian, and Middle Eastern markets, the industry standard term is milberry (often spelled with one or two L’s). When you are importing wholesale materials or dealing with global export logistics, knowing that these terms are interchangeable prevents costly miscommunications.

Other Names for Copper: Understanding the ISRI Grades

If you’re managing a factory floor or a foundry, you need to know the other names for copper grades to ensure you are feeding the right raw materials into your furnace. While millberry sits at the top, here are the other terms you will encounter:

• Berry (No. 1 Copper Wire): Still 99% pure, but it might have slight oxidation or minor discoloration. It’s clean, but lacks the “bright” shine of millberry.
• Cliff or Birch (No. 2 Copper): This is copper that has solder, paint, or light corrosion on it. It requires chemical cleaning before it can be melted, which drops its price.
• Candy (Heavy Copper): Generally clean copper tubing or solids, free of heavy brass or steel fittings.

Using the wrong grade means more slag in your furnace and a lower yield on your production line. That’s why serious buyers skip the mixed lots from local yards and purchase bulk scrap directly from processors who guarantee strict grading.
